Discover the Historic Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar: A Unique Texas Dining Experience
Nestled in the heart of Gruene, a mere 30 minutes north of San Antonio, lies the original river restaurant and bar, the Historic Gristmill. Housed within an authentic century-old cotton gin and overlooking the picturesque Guadalupe River, Gristmill offers guests an unparalleled dining experience steeped in history and tradition.
A visit to Gristmill is truly a journey back in time, with the restaurant situated beneath the iconic Gruene water tower and within the remnants of a 1878 cotton gin. For nearly 50 years, Gristmill has been celebrated as one of the most extraordinary dining destinations in Texas, thanks to its exceptional blend of history, location, and turn-of-the-century architecture.
Since opening its doors in 1977, Gristmill River Restaurant has been delighting patrons with its mouthwatering menu. Signature dishes include juicy steaks, succulent hamburgers, chicken fried steak, fried catfish, and Texas-sized sandwiches. Don't miss out on Gristmill's secret specialties, such as tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish, or indulge your sweet tooth with their famous Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie.
At Gristmill, guests can choose from a wide selection of beverages, including an extensive wine list, hand-crafted cocktails, and ice-cold beers. The bar also serves refreshing piña coladas, zesty margaritas made with fresh lime juice, strawberry daiquiris, and the finest sangria this side of the Rio Grande.
The multi-level restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor dining options, with breathtaking views of the Guadalupe River, cozy dining rooms featuring native stone fireplaces, and a relaxing beer garden. The River Grove, a beautiful bricked patio added in 1998, provides an idyllic setting for guests to enjoy their meal while surrounded by a grove of trees overlooking the river. With 10 distinct dining areas, Gristmill can accommodate parties of all sizes, from intimate dinners for two to large groups of up to 65 people.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 as part of the Gruene Historic District, the Gristmill invites visitors to explore its rich past and learn more about its fascinating history.
